The problem of obesity
Obesity is the plague of the modern world. Societies are living more and more affluently, which directly translates into people's weight. Entire populations are gaining weight by leaps and bounds, and more and more individuals are reaching record body weights. While overweight can be fought using non-invasive methods such as diet and physical activity, in the case of severe obesity it is sometimes impossible. The salvation for obese people, for whom diet and activity do not bring results, is of course bariatric surgery , or surgical treatment of obesity. There are many methods, and one of the latest bariatric achievements is the aforementioned stomach plication.
What does the procedure involve?
During a stomach plication, the surgeon reduces its capacity by sinking the bottom and curvatures of the stomach into its interior, using sutures for this purpose. Within twelve months of performing a stomach plication, its size is reduced by about 70-80%. The first attempts to perform this procedure took place at the end of the 70s of the last century, but it is only recently that this method has gained popularity.
Advantages of the procedure
The great advantage of this procedure is its low invasiveness. In this case, there is no removal of part of the stomach. At the same time, it is a method that carries a slightly lower risk. However, the effectiveness is just as high as in the case of other bariatric procedures.
As with other bariatric procedures, the success of the entire therapy is decided by the patient himself, because it is the subsequent adherence to nutritional recommendations that has a huge impact on the final result. It is therefore beneficial for the patient to strictly follow the advice of a dietician, and sometimes even a psychologist, who will help the patient in planning a healthy lifestyle and controlling their eating habits.
